Every time you drive through a school zone you see the speed limit signs that say “Speed Limit 15 When Children Are Present”, but what exactly does that mean?
The Manitowoc Police Department explained on Facebook yesterday, that the speed limit is set by a state statute which states that “when children are present” means that if a child is on or near the sidewalk along the street where the sign is posted, you must reduce your speed to 15 MPH.
This applies whether the child is on foot, or on a bike, skateboard, or scooter.
However, it does NOT apply when children are outside for recess.
The post closes by saying “Just remember, if children are near the street, lower your speed.”
