Editors Note – We received a call from the former owner of Candy Division who explained that she actually sold the business in May, and it is now used as a residential unit. The initial police report indicated that the officers has spoken with the owners of the store, but in fact, they are residents of the building. Candy Division ceased operation during he height of the pandemic.
A Manitowoc man is back in police custody after a series of incidents on Monday (September 5th).
Officers were called to the 1400 block of Division Street on a report of a man destroying a soda machine outside of a business.
The owners of Candy Division told officers that the man had pulled the cords out of the back of the machine and had taken the lockbox.
They then noted that the man had gone into a residence in the 1400 block of South 14th Street, which was later determined to be his former home.
The man resided there at one point with his wife at the time, but as his soon-to-be ex-wife noted, they lost the house after an incident in July of last year where SWAT was involved.
The woman also told authorities that the man was using methamphetamine regularly since he was released from jail in March.
Numerous officers eventually entered the home, which was noted as having boarded up and smashed windows, and a patched-up door to a bedroom, and found the 44-year-old man barricaded himself inside the bedroom.
Officers outside noticed the man attempting to light the house on fire and burning material could be smelled inside.
They were able to break in the door and arrest the man without further incident, but not before he started several patches of the floor on fire.
The man has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Damage to Property, Negligent Handling of Burning Material, and Disorderly Conduct.
