A federal judge has ruled disabled voters in Wisconsin can get help submitting their absentee ballots.
U.S. District Court Judge James Peterson gave the Wisconsin Elections Commission until September 9th to issue guidance to local clerks reflecting his order.
He ruled on a lawsuit filed after the state Supreme Court had affirmed a Waukesha County ruling that drop boxes were prohibited under Wisconsin law.
The justices didn’t address the question of whether voters had to put the ballots in the mail without help.
Judge Peterson wrote, “voters shouldn’t have to choose between exercising their federal rights and complying with state law.”
