American Legion Post 477 out of St. Nazianz will be rededicating the historic Meeme Liberty Pole next week.
The very first Liberty pole was erected in 1852 by Nicolas Dittmar, but it was destroyed in a sleet storm.
Another pole was erected in its place in 1889 by veterans of the Civil War in remembrance of their fallen brothers.
The pole is said to have been a gathering place for Independence Day celebrations until 1916 when it was once again destroyed, this time by a lightning strike.
The pole that currently stands was dedicated on September 3rd, 1922, by the American Legion Post of Kiel.
This steel pole has stood ever since west of Cleveland at the intersections of Highways M and XX and was even named a State Historic Landmark on June 15th, 1974.
In commemoration of its 100 birthday, American Legion Post 477 will gather for a rededication ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 5th.
Wisconsin American Legion Commander Julie Muhle will be giving the keynote speech.
