While the Manitowoc County Fair is a time for people to come together and have a good time, it is also a very important time of the year for young agriculturalists.
Many youths in the area spend all year getting ready to show their cattle, swine, lambs, and rabbits at the fair.
We spoke with three such individuals who have had some success at the fair.
Makyla Staudinger, who is going to be a sophomore this year, told Seehafer News that being in 4-H has given her the opportunity to learn from those who came before her and use that info to help others.
“I’ve had a lot of leadership opportunity through 4-H, and I have only been in it for like six years,” she explained. “I still see new people join every year, and they are eager to learn more.”
Jenna Gries echoed that feeling, saying that 4-H is all about “older kids helping younger kids, which is really awesome to see, that next generation of agriculture growing up, especially in a County that is so agriculture driven. It’s awesome to see many people representing the industry that is so important to our state.”
Jenna will be a freshman at UW Madison this coming school year, alongside Ben Lukasek.
Ben told us that on top of the bonding aspect, the fair helps teach youngsters the importance of hard work.
“They don’t look this good at home,” he joked. “You see the finished product here, but the kids put a lot of time in washing them, training them, getting them ready.”
Both Ben and Jenna are majoring in Dairy Science at the U, and hope to return to the area to as Ben put it, “Keep making a difference. Contribute the agriculture industry here.”
More dairy cattle judging is taking place today, along with poultry, and llamas and alpacas.
