A Manitowoc boy about to enter the 7th grade at Washington Middle School was honored during Monday night’s Common Council meeting.
Brayden Hunnicutt, who turns 12 this Friday (August 19th), received a Commendation from Mayor Nickels and the city for his role in an emergency medical service call in early July.
Fire Chief Todd Blaser tells Seehafer News that a neighbor of Brayden’s grandparents suffered a fall in their garage and was unable to get up for help.
The neighbor could only yell for assistance in the hope someone would hear them.
Blaser said “Brayden was that someone” and he alerted his grandmother, Reba Haile, that he thought he heard someone yelling for help.
“Brayden’s keen sense of hearing, there was just awesome to hear the shouts of someone being in distress,” Blaser explained. “Reba, the grandmother, helped out as well with having some previous medical experience and aiding the injured party.”
The chief went on to say the two of them found the neighbor in distress.
Reba quickly called 911 due to an injury suffered in the fall, while Brayden and his little sister, Nevaeh, awaited the arrival of Manitowoc Fire Rescue and gave them directions to the patient.
Blaser added another wonderful part of this unfortunate incident was neighbors Becky and Ryan Belinske who came to the aid of the neighbor during the ordeal.
“When the patient came back home they weren’t confronted with any type of cleanup that needed to be done,” Blaser said. “Becky and Ryan had taken care of that for the neighbor, so it was one of those feel-good stories of the community coming together, and making this the wonderful place that it is.”
The fire chief shared with those in attendance at the council meeting, “I’m proud of our public safety family in the City of Manitowoc, but we are even stronger with the assistance of the community.”
