The Manitowoc County Mariners held off the Kenosha Cougars in a very physical game Saturday night (August 13th) to advance to the Northern Lights Football League championship game.
Coach Brent Luebke’s ballclub defeated Kenosha 20-12 in the NLFL semifinals at Ron Rubick Municipal Field.
The Mariners’ defense forced 7 interceptions, including 3 by Lance Billings II, who returned one of the picks for a touchdown.
Billings also caught an 85-yard scoring pass from quarterback Marcos Alfaro II, but the Mariners’ offense was hounded all game long by a ferocious Cougars’ defense.
Still, they prevail and move on to the league championship on Saturday, August 20th at a location and time yet to be announced.
Their opponent will be the River City Rough-Riders, a 22-12 winner over the Rockford Revolution in the other semifinal game.
