Manitowoc County residents that own private wells can get their water tested for nitrates at no cost.
Every year during the Manitowoc County Fair, the County Soil and Water Conservation Department has people on hand to do the testing, and this year will be no different.
Department Education and Grants Coordinator Tara Wachowski explained to Seehafer News that nitrates are “one of the most common contaminants in drinking water and are also a leading indicator of other possible contaminants.”
She suggested that all well owners have a nitrate screening done annually.
To get your water tested for free, all you have to do is bring a roughly half-cup sample of your water to the Merchant’s Building during the fair, and drop it off at the Soil and Water booth between 10:00 and 6:00 p.m.
The screening will be completed while you wait or you can leave a sample at the booth and pick up the results later.
For those who are unaware, the Manitowoc County Fair runs from August 24th through the 28th.
