Know any teens who love books and are looking for some awesome summer reads? Well, let them know that they need to look no further because MPL has a great landing spot for them—the Manitowoc-Calumet Library System (MCLS) Battle of the Books is back! Our Battle of the Books reading list will keep teens turning pages for the remainder of the summer!
So, what is Battle of the Books? Simply put, it’s an MCLS book trivia competition. Each of the six libraries in the system (Brillion, Chilton, Kiel, Lester, Manitowoc, and New Holstein) recruits a team of teens who test their knowledge of a list of books they read during the summer. And this year, we’re excited to announce that Tweens and Teens from grades 5 to 12 are eligible to participate in the Battle of the Books!
We have selected six of the coolest Youth and YA books to hit the shelves in a variety of genres for our readers to choose from. This year’s list includes three graphic novels: “Quincredible: Quest to Be the Best,” by Rodney Barnes, “Yummy: A History of Desserts,” by Victoria Grace Elliott and “The Curie Society,” by Janet Harvey; one historical fiction: “Northwind,” by Gary Paulsen; one fantasy: “Pahua and the Soul Stealer,” by Lori M. Lee; and one horror: “Riley’s Ghost,” by John David Anderson.

Teens DO NOT have to read all the books to join a Battle of the Books team! The Battle of the Books is supposed to be done for fun, so read as many books as you are interested in—even if it’s just one. Any and all knowledge is useful to a team!
After reading the books, teams will meet a few times over the summer to practice for the Battle and test their knowledge. And because it’s summer, you can count on some snacks and fun with friends at each Battle of the Books meeting.
Up for grabs is the coveted Battle Trophy Plaque to hang in the winning team’s library. Manitowoc Public Library’s team had a seven-year winning streak going, but Lester Library’s team proved to be a fierce opponent in 2021 and took home the trophy! We’re determined to clinch another victory and bring the Battle Trophy home to MPL in 2022!
The Battle of the Books will take place on Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30 PM at Manitowoc Public Library. Similar to last year’s competition, the 2022 Battle of the Books will be hosted on the online quiz platform, Kahoot! Teams will celebrate the end of the Battle with a huge pizza party and free Battle of the Books T-shirts for all participants.
Manitowoc Public Library is still looking for a few more Teens to join our 2022 Battle of the Books team. Join us on August 18 from 6:30-7:30 PM for a team pizza party! We’ll review the books, have a practice Kahoot! Battle and then bring on the PIZZA! Registration is required for this team meeting. Head to www.manitowoclibrary.org/event/battle-pizza to secure your spot. Space is limited, so don’t wait!
If you have any questions about the books, the team, or Battle of the Books, just call Teen Associate, Lisa D., at 920-686-3030 or stop by the MPL Youth Desk.
See you at the Library!
