With more nice summer weather expected in the near future, the DNR is reminding boaters of the importance of wearing life jackets and staying sober while on the water.
In a news release, they note that nearly 80% of fatal boating incidents involve drowning and that even the most experienced swimmers can become victims.
Most people who drown in boating accidents know how to swim but become incapacitated in the water, such as being injured, unconscious, exhausted, or weighed down by clothing.
So far this year, 11 people have died from boating incidents, and another 25 died in 2021.
They also noted that alcohol use is a leading factor in recreational boating fatalities.
Much like a night out on the town, you can enjoy some alcohol while out on the water, but you should ensure you have a designated operator.
