Manitowoc continued its solid play last night (July 28th) at the Wisconsin Triple-A Legion Baseball Tournament at Wildwood Park.
Post 88 defeated host Sheboygan 5-to-1 in a 3rd round game behind winning pitcher Ashton Portmann, who scattered 5 hits and allowed an earned run in his route-going performance.
Portmann also aided his own cause with a pair of base hits in 3 at-bats and his defense played errorless ball.
Dan Schmitz went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and August Hecker knocked in a pair of runs, with one of them coming on a safety squeeze bunt.
Catcher Reece Stangel added a double as Manitowoc improved to 3-0 in the double-elimination tourney while handing Sheboygan its first loss.
They’ll now play Eau Claire (Friday night) tonight at 7:00 p.m. and Legion Post 88 is guaranteed a game tomorrow on Championship Saturday.
No matter the outcome this evening, Manitowoc and one other team will represent Wisconsin next week in the Great Lakes Regional at Midland, Michigan.
In earlier games at the State Tournament Thursday, It was Marshfield over De Pere 7-to-4 and Eau Claire beat Middleton 15-9.
As a result, both De Pere and Middleton have been eliminated.
