The family of a teenager shot to death by former Wauwatosa police officer Joseph Mensah has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
The suit names the city of Wauwatosa, Mensah, and former Police Chief Barry Weber.
17-year-old Alvin Cole was killed outside Mayfair Mall in February 2020. Mensah reported that Cole shot at him first during a chase.
Cole’s family argued the dead teen accidentally shot himself and then was shot five times by the officer.
Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm declined to file criminal charges against Mensah.
The suit filed Thursday calls Mensah one of the “deadliest police officers in American history.”
