The FRCC boys baseball Player of the Year this spring has taken a major step toward determining his post-high school academic and athletic future.
16-year-old Noah Wech, an incoming junior at Manitowoc Lincoln, became the first Ships Division-1 baseball commit since Jeff Wick signed with Iowa 30 years ago, after the pitcher/shortstop verbally committed to Oklahoma State University earlier this week.
“I guess it’s pretty surreal,” Wech told Seehafer News. “Obviously, you know being a young ballplayer when I was really little, it was always kind of a dream of mine to take baseball to the next level, either in college or into the MLB. Playing division-1 baseball has been a dream and stepping on campus last Friday at Oklahoma State (in Stillwater) it’s all coming true, I guess. The dream is coming true.”
When asked about the major influences in his young life, Noah doesn’t have to look too far, explaining it’s his parents Todd and Dana Wech.
He spoke about the “constant money and sacrifice that they put into me as a young ballplayer, constantly taking me to practices or travel ball tournaments and even sitting out in the spring cold for Manitowoc Lincoln games. They’re very supportive and super, super proud and my dad was a huge role model for me when I was little. He played some baseball and softball when I was growing up and I’d always go to his games and watch, with a plastic bat and ball in hand.”
In the classroom, Wech has a 3.4 GPA and looking ahead, he intends to keep his options open as a two-way player at the college level.
After committing to the Cowboys, Noah can turn his attention to his junior and senior years in helping his teammates achieve regular and post-season success, as well as possibly rewriting some of Lincoln’s all-time baseball records.
