The Green Bay Police Department is looking to go high-tech.
The Department issued a statement where they explained that they are in the research, evaluation, and testing process for Automatic License Plate Readers.
As the name implies, ALPRs automatically capture the license plate of every vehicle that drives through the equipped intersections, day and night.
Cameras are motion activated and can capture vehicle make, type, color, license plate, and other distinguishing marks such as bumper stickers or a roof rack.
A total of 28 of these cameras are placed throughout the city, but they only record the public roadways.
Also, they do not identify people, races, or genders, and do not use facial recognition technology. T
hese are simply to be used as a part of the Green Bay Police Department’s larger crime reduction strategy.
