Authorities say the Highland Park shooting suspect drove the Madison the day he fired more than 70 shots on the crowd watching a Fourth of July parade.
They say 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo the Third left his cell phone there in an effort to throw pursuers off his trail.
Crimo is accused of killing six people in the Chicago suburb Monday, then a seventh died in a hospital Tuesday.
He faces seven counts of first-degree murder in Lake County.
Crimo had been flagged by police as a clear and present danger three years ago.
Following that, he cleared four background checks as he bought weapons.
