The driver accused of last year’s fatal Waukesha Christmas Parade attack has changed his plea to not guilty by reason of mental defect.
Attorneys for Darrell Brooks made the switch last week in Waukesha County Court.
Three doctors have been appointed to conduct mental evaluations of Brooks, with the reports to be returned by August.
The defense team will need to prove Brooks didn’t know right from wrong when he drove an SUV through the parade crowd, killing six people and injuring dozens more.
His trial is scheduled to start in October.
