One of the candidates looking to take Ron Johnson’s Senate seat paid a visit to Manitowoc County yesterday.
Alex Lasry, who is running as a Democrat, visited the Saxon Farm in Cleveland, where he spoke with union and political leaders about his campaign.
“We were talking about some of the most important issues that are not just facing Cleveland, but really the entire state,” he said. “It’s things like how we are making sure our farms are able to continue to grow, roads, Wi-Fi, clean water. These are the issues that are facing everyday people here in Wisconsin, and that is what we want to fix when we get to Washington.”
Lasry told Seehafer News in an exclusive interview that he wants to get rid of the filibuster so things can “get done.”
He also said that if you want things to get done, look at what the candidates have done in the past.
“That’s something that I can say. I’ve got a real track record of accomplishment before I started asking for votes,” he said. “I think if we are doing those two things, we are going to see a lot more results in the U.S. Senate.”
We asked Lasry his thoughts on the ongoing gun legislation debate.
He was encouraged by the cooperation both sides have shown in this latest push, “…but I also think we need to make sure that we are able to go some steps further. I want to make sure we are able to ban assault weapons. I want to make sure we are able to enhance background checks so that bad people aren’t able to get guns.”
He did say that he is not anti-gun.
He explained in terms of purchasing a gun, “I want to make sure that law-abiding citizens are able to do so, and non-law-abiding citizens are not.”
As of now, there are eight Democratic candidates looking to beat Johnson this fall.
That list will be narrowed to one in the August 9th primary.
