An old scam has gotten a new skin. Ryan Brahm reports about a scam call he received yesterday.
I received a phone call from a Cedarburg number, and the person on the other line claimed to be from Xfinity. They told me that I had gone over my data cap for my at-home Wi-fi and that I would be charged $40.
There is one big problem with that statement. I do not have a cap on my data.
I placed a call to the Xfinity Customer Service line, and spoke with an agent, who confirmed that I did not have any additional charges on my account. The agent explained to me that if there were additional charges added for whatever reason, they would be listed my online Xfinity account, and an automated text would be sent to my phone.
Now scammers do also use text messaging, so the easiest way to distinguish a scam text and a real text from Xfinity would be by the number. If Xfinity were to send you a legit text message, there would not be a phone number displayed on your phone, but rather just the word “Xfinity”.
As always, if you receive a call from a company claiming you owe them money, the best plan of attack is to hang up, and call their actual customer service line just to be sure.
