Another lakeshore resident tied to what’s become known as the Greatest Generation has died.
Leo “Spitz” Heier of Manitowoc passed away last Saturday with family by his side at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center.
He was 96.
Heier enlisted in the Navy and served his country during World War II in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer USS Stack.
His obituary reminded us that Leo, a longtime employee at Manitowoc Engineering, was also a musician.
He was an avid drummer who played for the Romy Gosz Band and for over 50 years, “Spitz” played for his brother’s band, the Gene Heier Orchestra performing at sites around the United States and Europe.
He also sat in as recently as the past year for his son Mike’s band, known as the Kolache Bros.
Graveside services are scheduled to be held this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery with Deacon Alan Boeldt officiating.
All are welcome to attend and should meet by the Sexton’s house, near the main cemetery entrance at 1:20 p.m.
