The S.S. Badger Carferry is looking into alternative fuel sources.
The nearly 70-year-old vessel is the oldest in the U.S. that still runs off of coal, but that may soon not be the case.
A news outlet in Michigan is reporting that Carferry General Manager Sara Spore told them that her team is “in the early phases” of looking for a different source of fuel.
While no timeline for the change over has been announced, the change would be quite significant.
Being the oldest coal-burning vessel in the nation was part of the reason the Badger was named a National Historic Landmark.
That being said, Spore is not concerned about the ditching of coal-based propulsion having an effect on that designation.
