The Appleton Police Department was involved in a rather tense situation yesterday morning.
According to police reports, they were called to St. Bernadette’s Parish at around 10:15 a.m. after callers reported a man pointing a gun at someone and then at himself.
The unnamed 33-year-old man then climbed onto the church roof and fired two shots in the air.
SWAT personnel from around the area were called to the scene to secure the perimeter, and nearby Johnston Elementary and Appleton East High Schools were put on lockdown.
Negotiators were able to get the man to come down without further incident just before 1:00 p.m., ending the nearly three-hour standoff.
The man will be provided with mental health services and additional resources at the Outagamie County Jail, although it is not clear if any charges will be filed.
The Department said that the man was in crisis and was having a “very bad day.”
