Milwaukee has started Violence Prevention Month at the same time the city is on pace to set a record for homicides.
To kick off the month a group met Sunday near the Martin Luther King Junior statute and marched down MLK Drive.
Police statistics show homicides are up by 48-percent this year and that includes the shooting deaths of six children.
The youngest marcher, Rena Ellis, says she took part in the “Victory over Violence Walk” because she simply wants to feel safe when she walks down the street.
She says, “We got to stay living past 20.”
