Spring is known as “falcon season” at Briess Malt & Ingredients Company in downtown Manitowoc. There’s a falcon nesting box on the 11th floor of their grain elevator, and over 80 baby falcons have been born there.
Ron Schroder is Director of Marketing at Briess and he spoke with Seehafer News.
“It’s been occupied every year since 1992 with the first babies being born there in 1998.”
Schroder also had some information about the falcons they have in the nesting box.
“Bartell, who is a male, who is banded and is back for his sixth year.” He added, “The female, based on her markings, is one that we’re also familiar with. She’s back for her third year. Normally those eggs are laid in late March, and that happened again this year. There were four eggs laid. Based on being laid in late March, those eggs normally hatch right around Mother’s Day.”
The marketing director explains that falcons are one of the fastest flyers among all birds.
“They can fly at up to 240 mph, and because they’re so fast, they catch all of their prey in mid-air. That’s how they hunt.”
Those interested in seeing the nesting box up close and personal can go to briess.com and look at “falcon cam” live 24/7. Briess is said to have one of 35 nesting sites for the falcons.
After those eyasses are born, the company will be offering a “naming contest’ on social media.
