A scam caller has been targeting residents in Appleton.
According to the Appleton Police Department, they have been made aware of a scam where an individual is calling residents claiming to be collecting money to support public safety agencies.
While there are agencies that do that, the red flag with this scam is that they ask to be paid with gift cards or a money transfer.
The APD warns that legitimate organizations would never ask for these forms of payment.
They suggested that if you receive any mail or a phone call that appears to be a scam to hang up, or tear up the letter.
Other tips to keep yourself from being the victim of a scam is to remember that you can’t win something if you didn’t enter, and if it sounds too good to be true it likely is.
