Hildegarde Riederer Rebenack, age 101, of Shady Lane, Manitowoc, died Sunday, April 10, 2022.
She was born on April 6, 1921, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Joseph M. and Rosa (Denor) Riederer. Hildegarde was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, class of 1939. As a junior at Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Hildegarde was elected to both National Homor Society and Quill and Scroll by the National Scholastic Press Association. As a senior, Hildegarde was the editor of Manitou, their literacy magazine, which was a recipient of the Pacemaker award, a top honor accorded to the best high school literary magazine published in the United States by the National Scholastic Press Associate.
After graduation, she worked for the Herald Times, Manitowoc Citizens Loan and Investment Co., and Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corp. In 1943, Hildegarde joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) and served with Headquarters 2nd Air Force in Colorado Springs, CO. and then in Headquarters Strategic Air Command in Washington DC. She received her honorable discharge December 23, 1945, with the rank of Sergeant.
On December 26, 1947, she married Robert James Rebenack at St. Mary Assumption Church in New Orleans, LA. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1991. She and Robert lived in the New Orleans area and was employed with J. Aron and Co. Inc. and its successor as Chief of International Communications. She was a member of the National Association of Greater New Orleans. She was also a founding member of the Advisory Board of the Alzheimer’s Care and Enrichment Daycare Program.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Michael (Ann) Riederer, Manitowoc; Dennis (Dayce) Riederer, Manitowoc; Jeanne (Jeff) Joseph, Hudson, WI; James (Joan) Riederer, Albany, NY; David Riederer, Fond du Lac; Thomas Riederer, FL; Ann Marie (Stephen) Wagner, Fond du Lac; Mary Sue Pressentin, TX; Paul (Carol) Riederer, Arlington Heights, IL; Nancy Riederer, Racine, WI; Sharon (Charles) Gleason, Omaha, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph M. and Rosa Riederer; her husband: Robert James Rebenack; a sister: Margaret and four brothers: Joseph (Caroline) Riederer, John Riederer, Leo (Anna Rose) Riederer, and Harold (Lori) Riederer and a nephew: Robert Riederer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday April 20, 2022, at St. Francis of Assisi Grand Ave. site, 1416 Grand Ave, Manitowoc. The Rev. Jason Blahnik will celebrate the Mass of Christian burial. Relatives and friends may call at the Pfeffer Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 19,2022 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A Parish prayer service will be led by Deacon Mark Knipp at 6:30 pm. Visitation will continue Wednesday at the Church from 9:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc with graveside military rites accorded by Drews-Bleser American Legion Post #88 of Manitowoc
