Sheboygan County is one of three new areas where the DATCP has identified new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
It was also found in Columbia, and Polk Counties. HPAI has been making its way throughout the state since March, and has now been confirmed to be in seven total counties.
For those worried about eating poultry that was infected with HPAI, the DATCP says that as long as you handle and cook meat and eggs properly, you are not at risk to contract the virus.
As a reminder, poultry should always be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees, which kills most if not all unhealthy bacteria and viruses in the meat.
For more information on the virus, visit the DATCP website.
