Governor Tony Evers recently vetoed a series of Public Safety bills authored by 1st District State Senator Andre Jacque.
One of the bills that were vetoed would have released $1 million to help train more police officers and fix the staffing issues that have been plaguing local departments around the state.
Sen. Jacque called the move “a brazen display of political gamesmanship” as instead of passing Assembly Bill 836, the Governor announced he would be sending $1 million to the Wisconsin Technical College System in an effort to support part-time police academy programs in Wisconsin.
Sen. Jacque noted the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau had earlier confirmed that, according to their tracking of the Evers administration’s uses of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, no funding had been directly allocated to law enforcement before March 15, 2022 – something he had repeatedly referred to since the first of the vetoed bills was introduced last year.
Three other bills in the package were also shot down, namely Assembly Bills 777, 831, and 832.
