Better internet could soon be coming to more portions of the area.
Four groups in the area have applied for over $5 million in state grant money to help expand access to broadband internet.
The money would come from the Broadband Expansion Grant Program, which was included in the 2021-23 biennial budget signed by Governor Tony Evers last year.
The largest grant request was submitted by Spectrum Mid-America, which is looking to receive over $3 million to bring high-speed internet to 988 residences in the Towns of Herman in Sheboygan County and Meeme in Manitowoc County.
The Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation applied for $1.3 million to bring broadband to the stretch of Highway 57 from Random Lake to the Town of Rhine, while Frontier North has applied for nearly $1.5 million for a pair of projects in the rural areas of Elkhart Lake, Kiel and Random Lake.
