A local florist is celebrating a century of florists being in the Dempsey Building in Manitowoc.
The Flower Gallery currently calls the building home, but on Friday, they celebrated the fact that various florists have operated in that location since March 25, 1922.
Manitowoc Floral was the location in 1922 while the Flower Gallery is the area’s florist of choice in 2022 as the fifth proprietor in the floral tradition.
Patty Roth and Ashley Walesh spoke to Seehafer News prior to their Friday celebration beginning.
They said visitors often enter the store filled with memories of shopping at the same location as a child, pulling carnations from the same old-fashioned cooler with their parents.
Roth was asked why they are holding the celebration. She replied, “…because for a downtown to continue to thrive, we need to embrace the history of the downtown and support it and the shopowners that take a jump into old buildings and old surroundings.”
Walesh added, “It’s not just us as a flower shop, it’s really a celebration of the community and allowing us to still be here.”
The celebration took place all day Friday and will continue Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at the Dempsey Building at 102 N. 8th Street.
