Hospital Sisters Health System St. Nicholas Hospital is preparing for National Poison Prevention Week later this month by informing the public of the dangers of potentially poisonous medicines and chemicals.
The most recent data from the Wisconsin Poison Center show that Wisconsin had over 35,000 calls to poison control in 2020, nearly 40% of which involved a child five years old or younger.
If you encounter someone who was potentially exposed to poisonous material, you should remain calm, and call 911.
If necessary, you can also call the Poison Control helpline at 1-800-222-1222.
To help avoid the ingestion of poisonous material, residents are encouraged to keep cleaning products in a place that children cannot have easy access to them, and keep them in their original containers.
There is enough information on those labels to help doctors treat any ingestions.
