Supporters say Milwaukee’s Felmers O. Chaney Correctional Center needs to stay open.
One of the plans for a facility to replace the state’s youth prison would involve the conversion of the Chaney Center.
About a dozen people gathered outside the location Monday.
They say the center provides Milwaukee-area men with pre-release programming that is valuable as they re-join the local community.
The state is ready to spend $42 million replacing the Lincoln Hills-Copper Lake facility.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has said he won’t schedule a vote on the money until a location is chosen for a regional youth detention center in the Milwaukee area.
