A recent poll shows over half of Wisconsinites support allowing all students statewide to use publicly funded vouchers for private or religious schools.
Marquette Law School’s recent poll indicates that 59% want the option of vouchers, while 37% oppose the idea.
The poll comes on the heels of the state assembly passing a bill to expand the program. The state Senate is expected to do the same.
It will likely fall flat at the Governor’s desk, though, as Gov. Tony Evers will likely veto the measure.
Demand for the program as it stands now is high, as evidenced by Wisconsin’s Private School Choice Program’s website crashing on the first day of enrollment for the upcoming school year.
Some state Republicans have told the press that the evident demand should lead to an easy decision to expand the program, which they believe will increase accountability in public schools.
Democrats, however, argue that pouring more resources into the voucher program takes too much away from public school resources and their ability to improve. Sen. Larson compared the program deciding to attend a country club instead of a local park, and how a government subsidy would not be offered for that.
The poll can be found online at Marquette’s website.
