Seehafer News’ Friday report of a new shipping facility to be built in Manitowoc has raised some community concerns regarding housing for new workers. A similar issue is being addressed right now in Sheboygan.
A shortage of affordable housing, childcare and labor has led to the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation to raise funds to address the situation in the area.
According to a Friday press release, the organization has raised half of its $16-million goal.
The funding aims to ensure affordable homes in the area, despite price increases in the housing market.
Around 2,500 jobs are expected to be created, according to Friday’s release, as part of recovery from the economic blow taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To accommodate the addition of those jobs, the economic development group expects around 600 housing units to be developed through the program over the next three to five years.
