The Wisconsin Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee has approved spending $42-million on a new youth prison.
The juvenile facility near Milwaukee will replace the troubled youth prison in Lincoln County.
Dozens of young offenders would be transferred from the Lincoln and Copper Lake Schools located in Irma.
The plan made it through the Wisconsin Assembly and Senate last month on unanimous votes.
An amendment added by the Assembly required approval from the finance committee. Local approval will also be needed.
