The man that allegedly stabbed an Appleton Police officer has been deemed not competent to stand trial.
Troy VanGinsven was charged with Attempted 1st Degree Intentional Homicide, Battery or Threat to Law Enforcement, and two Resisting an Officer charges, one with the modifier of Causing Substantial Bodily Harm.
He has pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to those charges.
Now, he will not stand trial, as he was deemed unable to understand the proceedings, and thus unable to assist in his own defense.
According to police reports, VanGrinsven had pulled his vehicle into the parking lot of the Appleton Police Department in the early morning hours of March 30th, 2020, and approached the employee entrance.
When an officer attempted to make contact with him, VanGrinsven attacked with a kitchen knife, stabbing the office.
He has been ordered to undergo treatment in hopes that he will become competent in the future.
