Another Manitowoc Youth Hockey team that will be competing at a State Tournament this weekend is the Squirt B’s.
For those who are unaware, at the youth level, teams are split into age groups and at the beginning of the year, tryouts are held to determine who will be on the C team and who will be on the B team, which is typically a higher level of competition.
We spoke with the Manitowoc Breakers Squirt B coach, Mark Hinz, who said his players have had great coaches throughout their young careers so he inherited a phenomenal team.
“I’ve watched them develop their hockey sense, I’ve seen them develop their effort, and come together as a team,” he said. “It’s been very exciting.”
We asked Hinz what the key will be for his team going into the tournament in West Salem this weekend.
He said that he is relying on the momentum they have accumulated in the latter part of the season.
“We just…played to a tie against a team that really beat us badly earlier in the year, and that’s a good litmus test for our development,” the coach explained. “All the kids have been giving us such a great effort, and I am hoping to see that as we go into the tournament.”
We also spoke with Trevor Pinkerton, who plays defense for the Breakers. He said his favorite thing to do during a game, besides score goals is to “Block the shots.”
The sentiment was shared by fellow defenseman Brenalyn Goetz, who said she is excited for the state tournament this weekend, “Cuz we have a good team, and it’s fun to play on it.”
Tomorrow we will hear from the Peewee C team, whose tournament isn’t until next weekend.
