Manitowoc County and the City of Manitowoc have come to an agreement for the utilization of American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The aim is to build a water main to the Town of Newton and Town of Manitowoc to deal with water contamination issues in the area.
The City of Manitowoc plans to utilize $3.4 million in federal funds for the water main and will receive total matching funds from Manitowoc County.
Mayor Justin Nickels issued a release in which he noted, “The joint use of these federal funds ensures the citizens of the City of Manitowoc won’t have to solely pay for the costs of providing safe water to the citizens of the Town of Newton and Town of Manitowoc. It also ensures this project will finally happen, which has been a goal of the city for many years.”
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer contributed to the release, referring to the county’s 1-for-1 financial matching. “We believe that we should do the most amount of good for the greatest amount of people in our community with this one time federal money. This is an important way to do that.”
The city has started the process of bidding for the project and plans to construct the first phase of the water main in 2022, and will immediately begin seeking approval for the next two phases of the total project.
