Assistant Chief of Police Dan Brinkman took to social media Tuesday afternoon to confirm that one body had been discovered in the rubble of a Tuesday morning blaze at a bar in Sturgeon Bay.
Identification of the body is pending.
He added that investigators are still working to determine the whereabouts of one other individual who has yet to be accounted for. Officials say that the compromised integrity of the structure is making their search efforts more challenging.
The call about the fire engulfing Butch’s Bar came into authorities shortly before 4:00 a.m. The building also had rooms for rent above the bar, according to its website, nine of which were occupied at the time of the fire.
The United Way has been in contact with renters who have been displaced, with plans to coordinate with the American Red Cross as well.
The cause of the fire is unknown and it did not spread to other buildings.
