Two more bills written by Senator Andre Jacque have passed their first legal hurdle.
This pair of bills aim to allow law enforcement officials to have more weapons in the war against sex traffickers.
The De Pere Senator’s Human Trafficking Prevention Act would ban anyone convicted of certain human trafficking or sex offenses from owning or operating adult establishments and bans employment of anyone under the age of 18.
Then, Senate Bill 787 would extend the statute of limitations for second-degree sexual assault.
Statute of limitations is essentially the period of time in which someone can be brought up on charges for a crime.
Under current law, that time frame is 10 years for second-degree sexual assault. This bill doubles that to 20 years.
Sen. Jacque cited a report from the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network when he said “Every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. We can, and must, do more to protect hundreds of potential victims from being sexually assaulted each day.”
The sex crime prevention measures must now pass the Assembly and be signed by the Governor to become law.
