The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is home to a wealth of exciting content, but on Saturday morning, they will tone the stimuli down a bit to make the museum welcoming to visitors “looking for a more relaxed museum experience, no matter their age or ability level.”
Loud exhibit sounds will be dialed down during the museum’s free sensory-friendly submarine tour.
Additionally, the museum will make “sensory backpacks” available to rent for free. They will include weighted lap blankets, social narratives, headphones, fidgets as well as a communication book.
The UK’s National Autistic Society notes on its website that museums can present numerous obstacles to visitors with autism. Among the obstacles they mention are loud exhibits and the confusion that comes with navigating to and from exhibits as well as restrooms.
Sensory Friendly Morning will last from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Admission is free. For interested families unable to attend the event tomorrow, visit the museum online for a list of everyday accessibility options they provide.
