Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels told WOMT on Wednesday that housing for workers in the area is the future of at least a portion of the former Mirro property.
“We’re working with a developer for half of the property,” Nickels said, referring to the south half on Washington Street. “[It’s] for 57, I want to say, apartments – townhouse-style.”
The mayor also noted that there are federal credits tied to the apartments which are being applied for. The developer is, however, on contract for the property.
While many properties in the area are targeted at Section 8 or senior housing, according to Nickels, the idea here is to house workers.
“They would be income-restricted housing… It’s basically workforce housing. It’s intended for folks in the workforce, at certain income levels, to get them into homes.”
Seehafer News reported last month that Wire Capital Group submitted an offer for a project very similar to what the mayor described, but details are not yet known.
Nickels expects the project to start seeing progress by the end of the year.
