A spotlight has been shining on mental health for the past several years, and now a new program at the Appleton Police Department will help the boys in blue.
This new program has the Outagamie County Health and Human Services’ clinical therapist embedded with the officers and going on calls with them.
This is both for the officer’s mental health, and for the subjects of the calls they take.
While not every call makes the news, there are many times when an officer is called to a scene where an individual is in need of some emotional support.
While officers are trained in administering that, sometimes it is better to have a mental health professional administer that aid.
This pilot program will last for two years, after which the future of the program will be addressed.
