A man was arrested in Manitowoc after a flurry of erratic actions, including allegedly kicking a police officer in the chest as the officer attempted to use a taser.
Police responded to a call Wednesday morning at Harbor Town Inn on Calumet Ave. due to a guest behaving in an unruly manner. A 38-year-old man was identified by police as the suspect as he reportedly was witnessed swearing and yelling at the inn staff.
The caller from the hotel thought the suspect may have been under the influence of a drug due to his behavior, and as responding officers observed him, their report shows that they shared the same suspicion, believing that he was “either experiencing a mental health crisis or was significantly under the influence of a drug.”
He was allowed to re-enter his room at Harbor Town to collect his belongings before vacating, but police say he locked the door before yelling “bizarre, incoherent” profanities towards the officers. An ambulance was called to the scene out of concern for the man’s medical well-being.
The situation further escalated as the officers heard the sound of shattering glass and shouting inside the room, followed by a microwave being thrown out of the room’s window.
Police performed a forced entry using a battering ram. When the suspect reportedly did not respond to the officers’ request to safely comply, one of the responding officers deployed his taser but allegedly “delivered a front kick, with his right foot” which struck the officer in the chest.
The suspect was ultimately incapacitated by the taser and arrested, being booked into Manitowoc County Jail. He faces charges of resisting an officer, disorderly conduct, attempted battery to a law enforcement officer and criminal damage to property.
