Earlier this week, the Two Rivers Environmental Advisory Board gathered to discuss several ways the Cool City can be more eco-friendly.
One of those topics was in regard to a recently awarded contract for the Eggers Storm Water Pond.
City Manager Greg Buckley explained that the pond will “serve storm water runoff from about 50 acres between Washington Street and the East Twin River, and 17th Street up to 22nd Street.”
Another major project discussed is still in the proposal stage, where the city would “restore the shoreline south of the harbor entrance alongside the City’s Public Works and Utility facilities,” Buckley revealed. “We would like to do some things there with restoring natural habitat, improving the beach, and the public access to what is a real hidden gem of beach in the area next to the south pier.”
The Board is currently looking into some funding opportunities for that project through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
We asked Buckley why these projects are so important.
“You know, we live on the water with the two rivers coursing through the community, and amazing Lake Michigan frontage,” Buckley said. “We need to do our part to reduce runoff and more effectively manage our impact on those waterfront areas.”
The City is also looking to the future, as they are trying to incorporate eco-friendly aspects into any future redevelopment projects.
