With frigid cold weather on the horizon, Manitowoc Public Utilities is giving residents some tips on how to keep water pipes from freezing.
The biggest thing is to make sure you have the heat going in basements, crawl spaces, and utility closets.
If you use heat tapes in trailer homes or homes without basements, now would be the time to ensure they are plugged in and functional.
Another big thing is to look for drafts in your home. These could come from improperly sealed or slightly opened doors, or windows.
If you have an exterior faucet, make sure the shut-off valve in your basement is turned off.
Lastly, in case of an emergency, ensure you know where your water main shut-off valve is located.
