Despite concerns from some environmental advocates, a Kewaunee County Farm could expand.
The DNR has drafted new permit conditions allowing Kinnard Farms to nearly double their 8,000 strong herd, much to the dismay of Tony Wilin Gibart, executive director of Midwest Environmental Advocates.
Kinnard Farms had previously gotten in trouble for contaminating groundwater, and Gibart says that an expansion doesn’t address the issue.
He also says that the landscape in Kewaunee County cannot safely absorb the additional manure spreading that will come with the expanded herd.
The state Supreme Court in July affirmed the DNR’s authority to cap the number of animals on a farm and require groundwater monitoring as permit conditions.
