The City Council in Green Bay has taken the next legal step in helping fix the gun violence issue in their city but put a hold on the idea of purchasing a rather expensive piece of technology.
The Council voted in favor of the purchase of a Nibin machine, which compares cartridge casings, which could help link shooters to other incidents.
This piece of equipment is estimated to cost around $188,000, but the proposed purchase of a gunshot detection system was put on hold.
Police Chief Christopher Davis called the system a “deterrent”, while Alderman Chris Wery noted that the Mayor in St. Paul Minnesota called it “an expensive toy”.
The high-tech system would cost an estimated $655,000 upfront, plus around $140,000 a year to maintain.
The Council voted to allow Police Chief Davis to continue talking with technology companies about their systems but would not release the money to buy it as of yet.
