School safety at Manitowoc Lincoln High School continues to be a concern after a teacher was reportedly attacked by a student.
During the recent School Board meeting, Manitowoc Public School District Superintendent Mark Holzman gave an update on student behaviors, which included a slide showing the number of days students were suspended, and what they did.
The slide showed a two-day suspension for a student with a weapon, a stat that concerned Board Member Collin Braunel.
He voiced concerns during the meeting, so we reached out to him.
When asked if he thinks the School District is doing enough to keep students and staff safe, Braunel said “I am concerned when We are given a report stating that a two day out-of-school suspension being given for weapons at school. When inquiring about this, I didn’t get a feeling that the superintendent was taking our behavioral issue increases as seriously as they need to be.”
It should be noted, that while Superintendent Holzman did not state what the weapon was, he did say it was not a gun or a knife.
Braunel also questioned the number of liaison officers at the school given its size, and that communication needs to be addressed.
He closed his email correspondence by saying, “This is a big problem in our schools, and I think a correlation between performance and behavioral issues could be drawn.”
The suspect in the teacher attack is due in court today for their initial hearing, and a police report will be available after that hearing.
