A local man is looking to enact change within the Manitowoc Public School District from within.
Tony Vlastelica has submitted his paperwork to run for the MPSD School Board in April, and he said that he is running to represent the majority of people who want to see change.
“I feel that a small but loud minority of people has taken control of many of our institutions, including public education,” he explained. “As I got more involved locally learning about what was going on, I learned more about the recall effort. Digging into that more deeply, I was really alarmed at what I learned as far as the overall performance of our district under the leadership of these people.”
Vlastelica agreed with the individuals who were calling for the recall of some of the Board members in their belief that Superintendent Mark Holzman was given too much power during the pandemic.
“In the research I have done so far, it seems that they, in my view, don’t take the role of what a Board should be,” he said. “They more or less let the Superintendent dictate what’s going to happen. When you look at the performance trends, it’s hard to argue that.”
It should be noted that the recall effort failed because the people behind it failed to file the paperwork on time.
Vlastelica is encouraging others who share his views to step up as well.
“At the end of the day, I don’t really want this job if I’m being honest with you,” he said bluntly. “I’m just doing it because I feel the people that are in there now, not all of them but most of them, aren’t getting the job done. So, if there is a more qualified candidate with similar views, I would fully support them. Candidly, I feel like I am the most qualified candidate.”
