After Latino community leaders said the redistricting maps passed by the Milwaukee Common Council last month ignored them, Mayor Tom Barrett vetoed the plans.
Opponents said the maps ignored the rapid growth of the Hispanic population and diluted its voice and vote in city matters.
The 2020 Census shows an increase of 13 thousand Hispanics in Milwaukee making up 20 percent of the city’s population.
Mayor Tom Barrett says that growth needs to be reflected in the boundaries for aldermanic districts.
The Common Council will discuss Barrett’s veto at its meeting next week.
